First open is not first value in an onboarding funnel

Counting installs as the start of onboarding muddies Application Analytics for mobile onboarding funnel measurement. Separate exposure from meaningful progress.

A common pattern in application analytics is to place install or first open at the top of the onboarding funnel. That choice mixes people who never saw the welcome screens with those who abandoned mid-flow.

Treat first open as an exposure measure. Begin the onboarding funnel at the first intentional onboarding screen, and define a separate “first value” event for the action that proves the product did something useful — a saved preference, a completed tutorial task, or a first successful use of the core feature.

Charting both funnels side by side shows whether marketing volume or onboarding friction is the larger issue. Teams that collapse them into one chart often chase the wrong screen.

When you brief stakeholders, say which definition you used. Mobile onboarding funnel measurement loses trust quickly when first-value rates are compared across periods that redefined activation quietly.
