Reading onboarding drop-off without panic

A steep step decline is not always a broken screen. Context from session length, retries, and skip paths changes how you respond.

Mobile onboarding funnel measurement often produces a chart where one step loses half the cohort. The reflex is to rewrite that screen immediately. Sometimes that is right; sometimes the step is a natural filter.

Before redesigning, ask three questions: Did the event fire late relative to the UI? Are retries counted as new starts? Do skip paths exit the funnel by design?

Pair the funnel with a small sample of session recordings or support notes for that step. Qualitative texture prevents treating a deliberate permission decline as a usability failure.

When the drop-off is real, fix measurement confidence first, then experiment. Changing screens while events are unreliable makes Application Analytics look decisive when it is only noisy.
